The Many Hats of Fran
You may have noticed that I do a variety of different work, I thought I’d share with you some of the many hats I wear.
I trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and gained a BA in Prop Making. Myself and another awesome Prop Making friend are the first people ever to have been awarded a Prop Making BA from RADA. No matter what I do or what I work on, Prop Making will always be my first love career wise. I am a chronically creative person, I have to do something creative at least 20 times a day or I start to get withdrawals. Prop Making allows me to work using a variety of skills all at once. In one day I can be woodworking, welding, sculpting, mould making, upholstering and sewing and that’s just for one project! It’s the best job in the world!
Becoming a professional artist was a happy accident that occurred when I started studying an MA in Art, Health and Wellbeing. I became interested in effectively communicating the condition of migraine and created artworks to communicate this. My work was (and thankfully, still is) well received and I gained a lot of interest from charities, government, medical councils and the media worldwide. I thoroughly enjoy my work as a ‘migraine artist’ I get great satisfaction from raising awareness and deepening understanding. Some of my work is published and can be purchased here
Together with my husband and my parents, I set up a prop making supply company called Frankly Materials Ltd. We’re the first and only prop making supply company in Wales. We supply resins, silicones, foams and sundries to the creative industries. We offer a variety of products including bespoke manufacturing. In addition to selling products, we provide a Prop Making Consultancy service, our team has a combined experience of over 90 years in the creative industries. I really enjoy running the business, we have the best team (including Holly the Welsh Collie) and the most fantastic customers. Find out more about the company here
I work with a fantastic company called Big Ideas Wales who offer free support for young people who are interested in or who are setting up their own businesses. As a role model I’m privileged to have the opportunity to mentor and share my experience of starting a business in schools, universities, conferences and outreach learning centres. So there you have it! Some of the many hats of Fran!
